Faced with the goal of reducing total cost and the need to decrease the amount of off-quality product, the team's challenge was to provide a competitively priced, quality fiber to the two fine-paper machines located in Jackson. By focusing on factors influencing yield and furnish costs, the team has decreased off-quality rates and saved between $1.8 million and $3 million dollars annually. Boise Cascade, Jackson - Using MVT® Boise saved $1 million in production costs. Faced with a need to reduce costs in market conditions which were the worst in postwar history, the paper-makers on the "J3" paper machine used QualPro's MVT® to discover opportunities. Team members ran a quick MVT® experiment and discovered factors that allowed them to use higher mixes of cost-effective raw material and improve quality characteristics. The team then experimented with ways to reduce steam consumption. The results of these efforts will yield annual savings of $750,000 to $1 million for Boise Cascade's flagship paper machine. Champion International - Champion International uses MVT® tools to avoid $10 million capital expenditure. An opportunity to enter a new market depended upon Champion's #31 Paper Machine's capability to produce paper with a higher formation specification. Initially it was believed that a significant capital expenditure would be required to upgrade the machine's capability. Using QualPro's MVT® the formation number improved significantly. This improvement made it possible to meet the higher specifications without a large capital expenditure.
