Stores, Lowe's Uses Multi-Variable Testing to Improve Promotion Programs

"Lowe's senior management team has created a corporate culture that encourages and expects sustained improvement in all facets of the chain's operations. So when a senior vice president put the home improvement chain's advertising strategies under a microscope and was unable to measure their effectiveness, he went looking for some help."

"...Dale Pond, senior vice president-marketing, cites retail industry statistics showing that the average budget outlay for sales and promotion ranges from 2 percent to 5 percent of total sales...Pond decided that N. Wilkesboro, N.C.-based Lowe's needed a way to examine the individual components of its advertising programs, determine how these components affected each other, and then create programs and systems that would produce the greatest benefit for the company at the lowest possible cost."

"Through a colleague, Pond was introduced to a technique called, 'Multi Variable Testing,' and QualPro, a 'process improvement' firm headquartered in Knoxville, Tenn. QualPro is viewed by most observers as the leading proponent of this technique, which it uses to measure the quality and effectiveness of a broad range of programs and products for its clients."

Stores, Road Testing Ideas

"Bill Perdew, COO of Bridgestone Subsidiary BFRC, addressed the annual QualPro Leadership Symposium in October. The audience was all ears, especially since Perdew shared that the MVT process had resulted in 8.1 percent growth across its more than 2,300 company-owned stores.

It saved the company more than $600,000 that was to have been spent implementing a post-service "thank you" hangtag strategy many thought would be a sure fire hit....

..."When they drive into our facilities, it is an expense. It's probably going to have a negative impact on their grocery budget, so it is not a pleasant experience. Our challenge in our industry is trying to make it as painless as possible."

It should come as no surprise, then, that Perdew found himself "intrigued" by the possibilities that Knoxville, Tenn.-based QualPro offered. The idea was to take the guesswork out of the equation and replace it with good, hard facts.
