Training: MVT® Process
  • Top management does not necessarily need to learn the details of the MVT® process, but do need to understand the basic concepts to know enough about the process to ask intelligent questions and to understand the differences between good and bad answers. Training for top management often is provided in a one-day session, but some executives choose to go into more depth with a two- or even three-day session. A few executives go through several multi-day sessions with their direct reports. Invariably, the improvement efforts are more successful in these organizations.

  • Mid-management, supervisors, professional and technical staffs, and selected local workforce members: These persons are the core participants of any MVT® project. They will serve in key roles-as project leaders, factor owners, and data owners-and they frequently will be members of brainstorming and idea-categorizing groups. Their training typically includes two three-day sessions that teach the fundamentals of the MVT® process. This training, along with project experience over time, eventually minimizes the need for support from an outside MVT® consultant.

  • The local workforce plays an important role in the MVT® process. Its members execute MVT® tests and often maintain control charts on an ongoing basis. They usually are the most knowledgeable in investigating "special causes" of exceptionally good or bad results and can provide insight into the process. The training required to prepare them for their role is typically a one-day session.

  • Training is most effective when provided just before the person will use it. Therefore, training of the people to be involved in an MVT® project usually occurs at the beginning of their involvement in a live project. Often, the training is actually part of a project. During the training, control charts for the project are constructed from historical data, brainstorming for improvement ideas is begun, and a preliminary MVT® design is developed. This immediate, real-life application can make the training far more effective and cost is minimized.

  • MVT® Projects require seasoned process improvement experts with advanced statistical training in multivariable testing. This competence can be provided by QualPro or developed internally but the training process may take several years.
