What Customers Think: Comments by a Vice President for a major chemical company

Comments by a Vice President of a major chemical company presented at the 2002 QualPro Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia, comparing the MVT® Process and Six Sigma:

"We got together a cross-functional team of engineers, chemist, and plant technicians. We set them a key objective: Become experts in applying statistical methods for process improvement and use that knowledge to improve our plant. And it is here we were introduced to MVT.

We sent people on this team to various courses to learn about statistics and SPC, primarily how to use that properly. One of those courses was offered by QualPro, and, in that course, a statement was made that we found very profound, basically ten percent of process improvements come through statistical methods and SPC, and ninety percent come from breakthrough results uncovered by MVT.

We tried it out, and the first two tests worked. We saved, I guess, about seven million dollars (in the first two tests) ... the cumulative effort, since we started is about $47 million... The QualPro MVT process was a simplified approach that encouraged plant technician involvement, and for us, this is very important. We had just started reengineering of our site, and that left us very much team-based, so technician involvement was very important to us.

The MVT process seemed very logical, and we had proven it worked. It had focused training, which meant we could train managers on what was important for them to know, and we could train technicians on what was important for them to know. We could also train technical experts if we wanted to get more detailed and in-depth knowledge within our site, and, of course, coaching was always available, as we might need it."

When asked specifically to compare his financial results with similar results that he had observed in Six Sigma efforts in other company chemical plants, the executive said:

"The savings in their [Six Sigma] projects were of a much smaller size. I would say that the size of the results that we have gotten [using MVT] so far have been almost an order of magnitude larger. I feel the speed of implementation is also faster with the QualPro MVT process. There is a tremendous amount of training that has to go on in a Six Sigma effort that we didn't have to go through to achieve very big results."

The table that follows shows the executive's comparison of the MVT® process and Six Sigma.

Similarities of BOTHMVT® Process Showcased
  • Use a statistical approach
  • Have a focused methodology
  • Show proven results
  • Require high degree of commitment of top management
  • Is simpler and less complex
  • Is less expensive to Implement
  • Does not require a separate structure of Black Belts or site experts

Since 1982, QualPro has used Multivariable Testing (MVT®) with 1000+ companies to test 100,000+ improvement ideas. MVT® tests between 20 and 40 ideas simultaneously, accurately predicting the bottom-line impact of potential process changes in as short as 12 weeks. Take existing process initiatives, like Six Sigma, to a whole new level. All process improvement tools and approaches (TQM, DOE, Six Sigma, Re-Engineering, SPC) can be enhanced through the use of Multivariable Testing® by QualPro.
