What Customers Think: Comments by a Vice President of a major chemical company. Comments by a Vice President of a major chemical company (previously, for nineteen years, at General Electric) presented at the 2004 QualPro Symposium in Orlando, Florida, comparing the MVT® Process and Six Sigma: "Let me talk a little bit about the QualPro MVT process and Six Sigma. QualPro's MVT process delivers results, and I would say Six Sigma does, too. It's been successful-Motorola and GE wouldn't do it if it didn't deliver results. The QualPro MVT process requires discipline, and Six Sigma requires discipline to a fault....It's all about discipline there. Here is where we start to get different: the QualPro MVT process is fast. We had results in three months without pushing hard. Six Sigma, in three months, you might have gotten your organization identified, and maybe not even named your black belts or your green belts, or talked about the process. It is just very slow. It is extremely slow, in my opinion.... it delivers results, but it takes too long, and you lose a lot of people in the process of getting it up and running. The QualPro MVT process is very practical. You just go out and do it. You train people that need to be trained. You only train them in what they need to know and then you go do the project. You don't have people who get training and then six months later get asked to use it. They are using it right away. "It's easy to involve the frontline operators with the QualPro MVT process - extremely easy. In Six Sigma, the statistics just blow some of the operators' minds. It's all about statistics. You can't just engage the people in it. In the time I was in GE, we were not successful in engaging the frontline operators. We had to do it through the engineers. Focus on the people is what QualPro does, and Six Sigma focuses on statistics. I think we all want to be on the side of focusing on our people, because that's what this is about. I came to realize that, if you want, you can take the QualPro MVT process and use it to culturally change your organization, turn it upside down if you want, and you can do it effectively. Or if you think you have some good things going, you can take some rifle shots at certain areas of your plant, or single plants, and apply the process narrowly. And you can be effective and not lose anything by doing it. I think that is important. You can tailor this to where you are in your own productivity process. You know, with Six Sigma it is all or nothing, and they say that. You cannot do it half way. Finally, I think the QualPro process is done for lower cost than Six Sigma. With all the bureaucracy, Six Sigma is extremely high cost. So this decision, in the end, was really, really easy for this division of the chemical company. There was no doubt in my mind? It was the right decision for us. Now that we have done it, it has been perfect, we have gotten great results and we are really anxious to go forward and drive more of these great results." The table that follows shows the executive's comparison of the MVT® process and Six Sigma.

Since 1982, QualPro has used Multivariable Testing (MVT®) with 1000+ companies to test 100,000+ improvement ideas. MVT® tests between 20 and 40 ideas simultaneously, accurately predicting the bottom-line impact of potential process changes in as short as 12 weeks. Take existing process initiatives, like Six Sigma, to a whole new level. All process improvement tools and approaches (TQM, DOE, Six Sigma, Re-Engineering, SPC) can be enhanced through the use of Multivariable Testing® by QualPro.
