The MVT Challenge

The Challenge

The administration and OR leadership of a medium sized hospital were worried. Supply and staffing costs were higher than budgeted and throughput was poor (surgeons were upset about turnover time, non-productive OR time was high, and the OR staff was dissatisfied with frequent unplanned overtime).
  • Everyone had lots of ideas as to how to improve.
  • Unfortunately, they could execute only a limited number of actions.
  • They did not want to rely on the "best guesses" of experts to determine the actions or what worked at other hospitals. They had already tried both of these with limited results.
  • Since they knew that testing every idea would take far too long, MVT® was the perfect solution.
The Approach - The MVT® Process
  1. QualPro consultants thoroughly analyzed a year of historical data.
  2. They brainstormed with everyone involved in the Perioperative process (Transporters, Surgeons, OR Staff, Anesthesia Providers, Materials Management, Environmental Services, etc.).
  3. Hundreds of ideas were generated as to how to increase throughput and decrease cost.
  4. The long list of ideas was then narrowed to the 25 that were practical, fast and cost free.
  5. QualPro helped the company construct and execute an MVT® experiment that determined the impact of all 25 ideas with only 28 test recipes.

Testing every combination of the 25 ideas would have required almost 34 million tests and taken several lifetimes! Using an MVT® study, the hospital was able to test only 28 of the 34 million potential combinations to reveal the best solution.
